Mathematics

Key Stage 3

On entering the school, all pupils are assessed with a view to placing them in groups of a similar attainment level. This allows teachers to build on their previous skills acquired in Primary school. Pupils are able to transfer between these groups if such a need arises.

At this stage our intention is to teach the National Numeracy Strategy as effectively as possible and to provide lessons which are interesting and stimulating. Consequently the pupils are engaged in activities such as:

  • Problem solving and short term investigations
  • Using Maths in the real world
  • Statistics, probability and games
  • Learning about the history of Maths

Key Stage 4

The Edexcel examination courses are followed during Years 10 and 11 with pupils either taking the ‘linear’ or ‘modular’ course. The former is examined at the end of two years while the latter is split into units which are examined throughout the course.

Post-16

The faculty offers students the opportunity to re-sit GCSE exams as well as studying for the Edexcel Advanced Level course in Mathematics. Students take the AS course in the lower sixth and if successful, they go on to complete the full A2 units. The faculty offers three options:

  • Maths with Statistics
  • Maths with Mechanics
  • Maths with one unit in Statistics and one in Mechanics

Fast-track pupils

The faculty operates a ‘fast-track’ scheme whereby very able pupils are prepared for their exams one year early, therefore after sitting GCSE in Year 10, they start A level in Year 11.
